Can I Train My Duck Dog to be a shed dog?

Question: I have a dog that I've been training for duck hunting would it hurt him if I started to try to train to find antlers as well? Is there any pros or cons to it?

Answer: I do it with most the dogs I train...multiple things that is. I liken hunting dogs to young athletes. In my opinion, the more sports a kid plays, the better athletes they become. I think the more I hunt with my dogs, the better hunters they become. This is true with a bird dog, tracking dog, or any other dog. I think that the skill sets it takes to become a duck dog are a little different from a steadieness and patience standpoint when it comes to blind manners, but the idea of retrieve, delivery, nose work/game finding, etc are very much overlapping.
